Summer

Ten minutes later, I drove into the underground car park, watching for any sign of Lucy whilst also looking out for Aaron. The supermarket had arranged the car park as one giant level underground, rather than having many floors. It was dank, and the thick smell of oil burnt my nostrils. There was a vast outdoor car park, so the underground one seldom got used. There were less than a dozen cars parked in spaces far away from each other, most of them likely belonging to the staff. It took my eyes a minute to adjust, and the weak wall lights didn’t help that much. It was another long minute before I saw Aaron lurking in the far right corner.

I considered driving off for a moment as a pang of fear clutched me, but I knew that was silly. It was Aaron, for god’s sake. I had known him for years. I knew he was a good guy. Whatever reason he had for not confiding in me, he wouldn’t hurt me. I eased my car closer to Aaron. I hated underground car parks. The spaces were always far too narrow. All my previous cars had been worth less than a grand, and I’d bumped every one of them in similar car parks, or at least whilst parking. So I was wary of scratching the BMW and chose a spot about five spaces away from Aaron.

As I turned off the ignition, I realised how much I did not want to be there. It didn’t feel safe. I was tempted to drive away from the situation then and there. But thoughts of getting to the truth to ensure Joshua’s safety made me stay. I contemplated waiting for Kelly, but didn’t want to drag her into a potentially dangerous situation, either. I sighed. I knew I had to speak to Aaron alone. Slowly, I opened the door and looked up at Aaron. I wasn’t in a rush to see him. My earlier loneliness had vanished, and I suddenly craved being alone.

“Hey.” He smiled at me meekly. He seemed wary too. He moved from one foot to the other, and his eyes darted around the car park. His usual easy manner was nowhere to be seen.

“Hey, weirdo.” I tried to break the awkwardness with a smile. “What have you called me here for then?” My tone was light-hearted. Or at least that’s what I aimed for.

He smiled back weakly for a second. “There’s something else I need to tell you about Lucy.”

“Yes, you said on the phone.” I dropped my smile. I couldn’t be bothered to pretend anymore. “But I want no more lies, Aaron.”

“No. No more lies. Pinkie promise.” He stuck out his little finger.

I rolled my eyes. “So you admit you lied to me about Lucy, then? You know she isn’t a ghost.”

“I didn’t lie. Have you seen the plaque?”

I nodded my head in response.

“So you know there was a Lucie Clarke who died in the fire?” Aaron asked.

“Yes. A different Lucy, clearly.
